HCI International 2020

19 - 24 July 2020 - Held virtually

HCI International 2020, the 22nd International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction, was held from 19 to 24 July 2020, under the auspices of 21 distinguished international boards of 492 Members from 49 Countries. The conference was planned to be held at the AC Bella Sky Hotel and Bella Center, Copenhagen, Denmark, but due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic and the decision of the Danish government not to allow events larger than 500 people to be hosted until the 1st of September 2020, it was held virtually.

The format of the virtual HCII conference program has changed, spreading the duration of the conference to six days (19-24 July 2020), occupying also the period originally scheduled for the pre-conference tutorials that had been cancelled. In this way, the daily load of the conference was reduced to four hours: two sessions, two-hours each (with a half-hour break in-between). The conference started and ended at a different time each day allowing participants from different time zones (77 countries around the world) to join the conference during time-periods which, for some of the time, were more convenient for them, taking particularly into account - to the extent possible, the 'time-zone' of the presenters.

Over 2,400 individuals from 77 countries registered to attend this year's conference.

We were privileged to have Professor Gregg Vanderheiden, School of Information Studies, University of Maryland, Director of the Trace R&D Center and Co-Director of Raising the Floor – International and the Global Public Inclusive Infrastructure Project, joining us as the keynote speaker at the opening plenary session. His speech was entitled: “Advancing technologies will allow us to reinvent HCI. Can we use it to finally address digital interface inequality - with less effort - and to better effect?”.

We would like to thank each and every one of the Conference participants for their valuable contribution towards the success of this Conference.

We are hopeful that the current situation with the pandemic will improve and allow us to meet each other in person next year for the HCII 2021 conference, scheduled to take place at the Washington Hilton Hotel, Washington DC, USA, 24-29 July 2021. And as we were obliged to miss Copenhagen this year, we are planning to schedule the conference venue there for 2023.
